Democrats across the country erupted in outrage this week following the arrest of Senator Alex Padilla during a protest outside a Capitol press event. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland called it “an affront to democracy,” declaring he would march to Senator Thune’s office in protest of what he framed as authoritarian tactics.
But one Maryland father is calling out the blatant hypocrisy.
Jeff Reichert, a U.S. Army veteran, attorney, advocate, and father, had this to say in response:
“MARYLAND DID THAT TO ME MULTIPLE TIMES. You are gaslighting the public about something they can see for themselves and reading a script that all Democrats are reading today. In 2020 on four occasions. Over three weeks. In the safety of my home. In front of my 12-year-old son while I was watching basketball with him. By many more officers than that. During COVID. And taken to jail violently in handcuffs and shackles and kept in jail for days. ALL ILLEGALLY. ALL charges dropped — NO JUSTIFICATION.”
He’s not alone.
Across Maryland and the country, countless parents — particularly fathers — have been arrested, jailed, and shackled in front of their children under questionable and often unconstitutional circumstances. Their stories are met with silence. No press conferences. No marches. No handwringing speeches from Jamie Raskin or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. No solidarity statements from Cory Booker or Chuck Schumer.
Because apparently, due process only matters when it’s one of their own.
Let’s be honest: the party that claims to champion “justice” and “democracy” has shown over and over that it only applies those words selectively — when politically convenient or when cameras are rolling. For Jeff Reichert and many others, Maryland has become a hotbed of judicial overreach, family court corruption, and civil rights violations. He has demanded an audience with Senator Chris Van Hollen — but so far, no statement. No invite. Just more silence.
Where was Jamie Raskin when Maryland law enforcement stormed Reichert’s home multiple times without cause?
Where was the Democratic Party when Jeff’s son was forcibly separated from his father — not for abuse, not for crime, but because of a weaponized court system?
And more importantly: How many more fathers, mothers, and innocent citizens have to be wrongfully arrested, silenced, or traumatized before Democrats care?
This is the two-tiered system Americans are growing sick of.
The outrage over Padilla’s arrest isn’t about principles. It’s about politics. If the same thing happens to a poor parent in Maryland — silence. If it happens to a senator on TV — outrage. Jeff Reichert’s story may not fit the narrative, but it exposes the truth: for all their speeches, the Democratic Party only fights injustice when it’s politically beneficial.
If Senator Van Hollen or Representative Raskin are serious about protecting democracy, they should start by meeting with Jeff Reichert and other Maryland parents who have been trampled by the very system they swear to uphold.
Because justice isn’t just for senators.
It’s for the rest of us, too.
